In decades prior to the turn of the century, luxury carpet and rugs meant wool or silk, hand-knotted or woven, all imported from a limited number of sources at a very high cost. The waiting time and delivery charges further added to the inconvenience and expense. Silk and wool are still popular today, but in addtion, many man-made fibers are now available as well.
